Today we finally began reading the actual text of Antigone, after a brief review of what happened before the play starts, as well as a reminder that Greek drama was also a religious ritual.
Today we read the Proglogue, the Parados, Scene 1, and Ode 1 (complete with the Chorus Shuffle). Please find a PDF of the text HERE HOMEWORK: Re-read Ode 1 and try to figure out just what it is the Chorus is saying. Today we... Took our seventh vocabulary quiz, and began work on our eighth set of new words. Homework sheet now available in PDF!
(Disclaimer: Mrs. Hopkins' school computer had some technical difficulties after school, so this post is being done from home...meaning there won't be any downloadable documents...yet. Check back later, like Friday afternoon, for update.)
Today we... "Voted With Our Feet" about the prompts we wrote on yesterday. This means we all got up out of our desks and moved to one side of the room or the other depending on how we felt about the prompts. For example, in response to the prompt that asked if it the statement "The sins of the father will be visited up on the son," one side of the room was for students who agreed with that concept, while the other side of the room was for students who disagreed. Students who were unsure stood in the middle of the room. Once we voted, we shared our thoughts, and discussed our different points of view. We did this for each of the five prompts. We then delved right into a brief overview of Greek drama, in preparation for reading Antigone. Greek plays were actually considered to be religious ceremonies. Then we read the myth of Oedipus, which is the precursor to our play. Quite the ick-factor in that story! The packet that we used today will be uploaded tomorrow, Friday. ******Today was the final due-date for your paragraph portfolio. It was to be submitted to Turnitin.com by 7:40am. 13 of you have not submitted your final draft. Anything turned in after the designated time is considered late, and may or may not receive full credit. The paragraph portfolio is THE major assessment for our short story unit. Not turning this in is akin to not taking the final exam... Today we... Got checked off on our vocabulary homework. Did an in-class writing assignment in order to prep for reading Antigone, our next unit. Assignment is below. QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER -- IN-CLASS WRITING ASSIGNMENT
Directions: Each of the five prompts below deals with a major idea in the play Antigone, which we will start reading tomorrow. For each prompt, write a paragraph response of at least two chunks. Your concrete details can be examples from the real world, from books or stories you have read, from movies or TV shows you’ve watched, or from your own experiences. You need to have a clear topic sentence, at least two specific concrete details, and solid commentary. You will need to complete this assignment on your own sheet of paper. This is due at the end of class today.

Once again visited Turnitin.com in order to address any further grammatical issues. We then worked with a partner to do a final Writer's Workshop, taking a last chance to revise for coherency, structured writing elements, etc. HOMEWORK:

Grabbed Chromebooks at the beginning of class. Mrs. Hopkins showed us the GradeMark feature of Turnitin.com, which highlights grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. We worked on eliminating these errors from our paragraphs, and began another revision. HOMEWORK: Resubmit revised paragraphs to Turnitin.com before class. |
