INTRODUCTIONS
Many of you have expressed dismay about introductions. The most important thing to remember about an introduction is that it needs to get more specific with pretty much every sentence. It starts with a big, broad topic and ends with a tightly focused thesis statement. Here's how to do that, and what I expect a good introduction to do:

CONCLUSIONS I don't hear as many of you complain about conclusions, but I honestly feel like they're harder than introductions. The important thing to remember is that you're summarizing your argument, and giving the reader something to explain why they should care about the topic. Here's how to do that, and what I expect a good conclusion to do:

Today we were introduced to a new reading strategy that focuses on analyzing non-fiction: SOAPSTone Presentation.
Then we re-read "The Unknown Rebel" from yesterday, and mapped out Tiananmen Square, following the descriptions in the article. Today we finished going over the rhetorical devices and fundamentals of rhetoric (see document posted yesterday).
Then we read the first of our non-fiction articles, "The Unknown Rebel", about the Tienanmen Square Massacre and Tank Man. Work time on AQ essay.
Rough draft due on Tuesday. School closed both days due to inclement weather and power outages.
Vocab Quiz #7
Looked at student writing samples from the paragraph portfolios and analyzed against a rubric. Final work time on portfolio reflections, and, if you were done with that, work on fully fleshing out your All Quiet outline.
Reflections are due on Monday. On Monday we will focus on looking at example paragraphs and how to improve them. Today you had work time on your portfolio reflection while Mrs. Hopkins was away at the sophomore DWA scoring conference.
