Today Mrs. Hopkins returned our DWA Reflections. Please remember this is currently the only assignment in the writing assessment category, which currently makes up 50% of your grade, so even though it is only worth 10 points...it holds great weight. Today Mrs. Hopkins went over the Night essay assignment in great detail. In addition, she closely went over the condensed list of rhetorical devices. These are the only devices you should be using in your essay. Please see below for our writing prompt. It is a picture prompt today, which means you can write about anything the picture inspires. Does it make you want to tell a story? Feel a certain way? Do you want to critique it as art? ("It's astounding art!" "It's terrible art!") Go with your initial response. Remember, you need to be writing for the entire ten minutes, even if you don't know what to say.
Today we broke down into groups and shared our one-pagers with each other. Mrs. Hopkins returned our Night freewrites and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas film review. Some of you may want to redo these assignments for a better grade. If that is the case, please include the original graded paper with your redo. Then Mrs. Hopkins gave us the essay assignment for Night We will be working on it in class next week. You do not need to prepare anything over the weekend, as we will be looking at it in depth in class on Monday. Today many students were out taking the PSAT. We had a really hard time handling your absence. AND you also missed out on a super fun art project: CLICK HERE FOR SUPER FUN ART PROJECT THAT IS ALSO TOTALLY ACADEMIC AND EDUCATIONAL BUT IT'S FUN AND ART AND HEY DID I MENTION IT'S FUN ART? IT'S TOTALLY ARTSY FUN. Rubric is on the second page. Work time in class, due tomorrow at the beginning of class, with rubric! PSAT kids, you obviously don't need to comply with this deadline. I will decide by tomorrow morning if this is an assignment I will want you to make up. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we got back into the groups we had yesterday. We chose one other group to work with. We exchanged main idea statements, and then critiqued each one according to the rubric scales found below. We used the template below to document our evaluations. This includes choosing a single "best" main idea statement, and then revising it in order to receive a minimum of a 3 on each scale. Then the groups reconvened, shared their "best" statements and revisions, and chose, between the two groups, a single main idea statement to be their example. Main Idea Evaluations needs to be submitted to Turnitin.com by the end of class. Reminder: Night Study Questions are due at 11:59pm tonight. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Our upcoming essay on Night will include the prompt: How does Elie Wiesel use rhetorical devices to express the main idea of Night? Today we got into groups of 3, and focused on writing main idea statements about Night. We brainstormed 5 different main ideas/thematic statements. We logged them, kept copies for ourselves, and turned in one sheet with the brainstorms to Mrs. Hopkins. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Reminder that Mrs. Hopkins is giving you until the end of the day tomorrow to turn in any missing work, without penalty. If you are doing anything that must be submitted online (survey), you must email Mrs. Hopkins and let her know you have completed it. We had class time to check grades and determine what we are missing. We then had time to work on the Night study questions, which will be due on Wednesday at 11:59pm, on Turnitin.com: http://sarahopkinsla.weebly.com/night---elie-wiesel.html Please see below for our writing prompt.
After writing, we turned in our first two weeks of daily writing, stapled in chronological order (oldest first), with a cover sheet on top. The cover sheet simply needs to have your name, your period number, and Weeks 1 & 2 on it. There are very few items in the gradebook right now. As such, if you have any missing assignments, your grade is negatively affected. I will take any missing assignments, without penalty, on Monday, February 22, when we get back from break. Please finish reading Night during break. According to what we have left, this amounts to about three pages a day. This is totally manageable, and what I would expect you to finish over a regular weekend. No excuses to not be finished. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today was silent reading, up to page 85. Last sentence read should be: "It snowed on and on." Stop reading if you see "An icy wind was blowing violently, but we marched without faltering." Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today was silent reading, up to page 66. Last sentence read should be: "That night, the soup tasted of corpses." Stop reading if you see "The summer was coming to an end." Please see below for our writing prompt.
We continued to read from Night, to the end of page 39. Also note the new tab with a link for Night "stuff," including a study guide question sheet which will be updated frequently. |
