Yesterday we took our first vocabulary quiz. You can find our next set of Vocabulary in Context words at the link below: American Literature Vocabulary Week #3 Today we opened with a hypothetical scenario and a freewrite, regarding a school Honor Code. After listening to the scenario and imagining our role in it, we wrote for 15 minutes in response to a prompt. We then discussed the results for approximately 15 minutes. We turned our writing in at the end of the discussion.
Instructions for the activity can be found here: FREEWRITE SCHOOL HONOR CODE We closed class by watching a video on the Salem Witch Trials. But do not fear! We will have it tomorrow!
Today we worked in groups to research the history, causes, effects, etc. of the Salem Witch Trials. We are transitioning into our reading of Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. We divided into six groups, and each group was responsible for researching one of the listed topics/questions below. All work should be completed in class, and groups should be ready to present tomorrow. Easiest presentation format is some sort of PowerPoint. Homework: finish work on your presentation if need be. We had shorter periods today due to the Welcome-Back Assembly. We discussed what was covered in Mrs. Hopkins' absence. No homework over the weekend.
Today we read "Young Goodman Brown" and answered THESE QUESTIONS on the story. Your answers to the questions must be submitted to Turnitin.com before the start of class tomorrow.
Today we turned in our reflections on "The Minister's Black Veil" and took an assessment on the tenets of Puritanism.
No homework for today, Today we finished reading "The Minister's Black Veil." We reviewed the timeline/plot of the story, and discussed the symbolism of Mr. Hooper's veil.
For homework: Please write a reflection on "The Minister's Black Veil." Speculate why Mr. Hooper suddenly felt compelled to wear the veil--what possible scandal or secret sin could he have committed? Even though Mr. Hooper insists he will never tell--and suggests that he has not committed some sin--come up with your best conspiracy theory. Use evidence from the text to support your theory. In addition, explain how this story is relevant or important to Puritanism and its tenets. Be ready to turn this in tomorrow. OTHER HOMEWORK: study for the test on the tenets of Puritanism tomorrow. Today we took our first vocabulary quiz. You can find our next set of Vocabulary in Context words at the link below:
American Literature Vocabulary Week #2 We then did a quick review of Puritan tenets and theology, and got a little bit of background info on Nathaniel Hawthorne. We then began to read Hawthorne's short fiction, "The Minister's Black Veil" (link to PDF can be found under our Puritan tab). Today we finished our "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" mini-responses and turned them in at the end of class.
Be prepared for a vocabulary quiz on Monday! Today we had a presentation on Jonathan Edwards, and Mrs Hopkins did a dramatic reading of his ultra-famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." (Full text can be found in our resources tab--plus you should have gotten a photocopy from Mrs. Hopkins.)
We then started a mini-response project: INSTRUCTIONS CAN BE FOUND HERE. Although the instructions say due at the end of the period, we will finish them up tomorrow during class. Keep studying your vocab--quiz will likely be on Monday. :) |
