Today we got back into our pairs from yesterday and then met with another pair and evaluated each other's theme statements, and then wrote new ones. We will be going over these together in class tomorrow. No homework. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Rubric/Scale: Defining the Thesis (Theme) of a Piece of Fiction Working in pairs, rate each of your theme statements from yesterday on the above scale. (Each partner is responsible for keeping track and documenting all of this.) Be sure to identify the scale for each of the four components (central topic, author's opinion, clarity, depth). Once your original statements have been rated, revise and score. Identify which of these two is "the best." Then, together, compose three new theme statements using different topics, and score. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we finished reading "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce. We discussed the implications of the structure and composition of the story, and how it would be different if written in a romantic fashion. The learning goal of this unit on Realism is "Students will write a thesis statement that is clear and arguable." As such, we each had to write one theme statement about the story. Remember a theme statement is a thematic topic + author's opinion on the topic. We will analyze these thematic topics tomorrow according to a rubric/scale on theses found in fiction. No homework. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we shared our visual summaries and realism analysis. Didn't get to each group, so we will finalize on Monday. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we finished working on our visual summaries and our written explanation of how the section fulfills the eight elements of Realism. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we continued work on our visual summaries for the first section of "Owl Creek Bridge." We also began writing a summary that connects the section to each of the eight elements of Realism:

Today we began reading our first selection, found at the link below: "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce However, we only read the first section of this short story, so not even a full two pages. Once we finished reading this incredibly detailed description of a mere moment in time just before a hanging, we broke into groups of three. Groups need to recreate the written description in visual form: basically, use the description and details in the story to draw what the author must have been picturing in his head! Later groups will also be doing a written summary, but today was focusing on beginning to map out the scene. No homework. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we began a new unit on Realism. Here is the worksheet to go along with the introductory lecture: American Realism Lecture Notes And here is the lecture presentation: Intro to American Realism The worksheet must be submitted to Turnitin.com upon completion. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we turned in Weeks 5 & 6 for our daily writes. In first period we watched the beginning of a 2002 feature length film adaptation of "Bartleby the Scrivener" called...Bartleby. It's a weird, modernized version with creepy music and an even creepier Crispin Glover as the titular character. In fifth period the power was still out from earlier in the day, so we chatted together about "stuff." No homework. |
