Please see below for our writing prompt. It is a picture prompt today, which means you can write about anything the picture inspires. Does it make you want to tell a story? Feel a certain way? Do you want to critique it as art? ("It's astounding art!" "It's terrible art!") Go with your initial response. Remember, you need to be writing for the entire ten minutes, even if you don't know what to say.
DESIGN A SCHOOL ESSAY COMMON RUBRIC Please see below for our writing prompt. It is a picture prompt today, which means you can write about anything the picture inspires. Today we had an in-class short essay. It is due tonight, by 11:59pm, on Turnitin.com. Please click the link below for full directions, but the basic idea is that you are writing about your personal opinions on Hippie Hank and his BFF Ralphie Em...without using first person. It should be chock full of adjectives and commentary. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we got back into our ten groups, but moved our group numbers up one (Group #1 became group #2, etc.) Looking at the shared document that contained each group's summaries from yesterday, groups today evaluated the group summary they were now assigned to. They needed to make sure the summary was accurate against the full original paragraph, and then they had to summarize the summary down into one single sentence. Then two groups combined at a time (group #1 with group #2, #3 with #4, etc.). They evaluated each other's single sentence summaries. Then, they looked at their single sentence summaries and distilled them down into a single sentence. This is more than just altering punctuation and making a long sentence. It may be that parts of each sentence needed to be removed, or perhaps one sentence needed to be eliminated entirely. At this level of distillation, there should only be references to Thoreau's philosophy, not his specific experiences in jail. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we broke down into 10 groups, working in pairs or triads. Each group was assigned a paragraph (or group of paragraphs) in "Resistance to Civil Government", the goal being to summarize/paraphrase each paragraph. This is best achieved by first paraphrasing each sentence, without quoting Thoreau at all, and then continuing to pare down from there. Summaries should be about five sentences long or so. We then read the summaries aloud in class. Groups need to email me their summaries to be compiled into a single document for us to work on tomorrow. Abnormal assignment is due tomorrow by 11:59pm. Please see below for our writing prompt.
Today we read Henry David Thoreau's "Resistance to Civil Government." Reminder that your Abnormal assignment is due Wednesday, at 11:59pm on Turnitin.com. Please see below for our writing prompt.
After writing, we turned in our first two weeks of daily writing, stapled in chronological order (oldest first), with a cover sheet on top. The cover sheet simply needs to have your name, your period number, and Weeks 1 & 2 on it. Reminder: "Simplicity" reflection is due at 11:59pm today. If you haven't already, you will need to sign up for the second semester Turnitin.com class. Codes can be found under the Turnitin.com tab. ***Technically you don't have any homework over break, but it behooves you to attempt to do your Abnormal assignment during our 10-day holiday from school. Written reflection is due the Wednesday we come back. Please see below for our writing prompt.

We finished reading "Walden," focusing on the conclusion. Turns out Hippie Hank coined a phrase we are all familiar with! Please note there is a new drop down menu for Romanticism unit resources, including PDFs of the textbook readings. It also includes writing assignments, etc. Today, please read the Articles about Thoreau stuff, focusing in particular on the article by Anna Quindlen on page 4, "Doing Nothing is Something." Then, check out the Simplicity reflection assignment, which is due Friday at 11:59pm on Turnitin.com Please see below for our daily writing prompt.
After writing, we began class reading some super historically accurate text messages between Hippie Hank and Ralphie. We then began to read "Walden", up to page 241, top of the second column. We will continue with this super exciting read tomorrow. |
