Today we... Had our first formal book club meeting. This included creating a communal document on Google Docs we will be editing/using each time, charting characters and descriptions, logging quotes we found, and then diving into our discussion questions. Instructions for the meeting are below, in the PowerPoint. HOMEWORK: Study for the vocabulary quiz on Wednesday, and be prepared to start writing our synthesis paragraphs about the Age of Reason.

Shared our mini-summaries of the Grievances. Then, we finished reading the Declaration, which is perhaps the greatest breakup letter of all time. We identified and highlighted ethos, pathos, and logos in each paragraph. HOMEWORK: Since we don't have class together this Friday because of the conference schedule, be prepared for our first book club meeting on Monday. Our vocabulary quiz will be on Wednesday. Read a brief biography of Thomas Jefferson from the They Signed Their Lives Away book. We then jumped head-first into reading The Declaration of Independence. After reading the first three paragraphs together (the fun stuff we are all familiar with), we worked in pairs on the Grievances, writing mini-summaries for each of the 19 (or, translate them into "normal speak"). We will be ready tomorrow to share our mini-summaries. Today Mrs. Hopkins read selections to us from the following book: We were not required to take notes and we will not be tested on any of this material. It is only supplemental. Please find below the guidelines for a "read aloud."

Had mini-presentations from three groups on the portion of their Age of Reason pamphlets about Thomas Paine and The American Crisis. Analyzed The American Crisis paragraph by paragraph. We got through the first four. For each paragraph, on a separate piece of paper, we had to highlight and define words we did not know, write a one to two sentence summary of the paragraph, and then identify one example of one appeal and explain why it satisfies the requirements for either ethos, pathos, or logos. HOMEWORK (for Monday): Finish the last four paragraphs of The American Crisis, along with the summaries, definitions, and appeals. You should only take about 15 minutes per two paragraphs.
