Today we...
Did our second writing prompt (please see below). We continued reading Thoreau's Civil Disobedience, and in two out of our three classes, we even finished it! Today we...
Began the first of our daily journal writing prompts. This will be an on-going, semester-long project, so you will be expected to make up any missed days. Class will begin with a writing prompt displayed on the board. Once the bell rings, you are expected to get straight to work, silently writing until you hear the timer ring. (We will typically be writing for 5-10 minutes per day.) The prompts are meant to inspire you: you should try to address the prompt, but if you feel like writing about something else, that is absolutely fine. Here is the caveat: You MUST write the entire time, even if you don't know what to say. If you don't know what to say (and you can't come up with your own alternative), you should attempt "automatic writing," which is writing whatever is in your head, even if you are writing something like, "I don't know what to write, I don't know what to write, I don't like this prompt, I'm thinking about my math homework..." Doing this exercise will allow you to empty yourself of whatever thoughts are preventing you from writing on command, and you will find that you ARE able to write after a time. You will receive credit if your entry is just an automatic response, but only if it is every once in a while. If the majority of your entries are like this, you are not making a real attempt at writing, and you will not receive credit. For now, your entries will be handwritten, and will be submitted all at once, perhaps a week or two weeks at a time. Make sure you write your name on each page, and label each entry with the appropriate date. If an entry is unlabeled, it will receive a zero, Keep these in a folder or notebook for submission later. Ultimately, these journal entries will be composed daily on Chromebooks and submitted to Turnitin.com. Please find the first prompt below. After we wrote, we continued reading Civil Disobedience by good ol' Hippie Hank. Today we... Wrote in response to the prompt above (what do you think? Do you agree? Disagree? Why?), and then began reading together Thoreau's Resistance to Civil Government (or, simply, Civil Disobedience).
Click here for Part I. Click here for Part II. Today we... Went over our prompt for the final synthesis essay on Transcendentalism.

We did not have class today in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.
