2nd PERIOD ONLY****Your final versions of the Issues essay is ***DUE***TOMORROW DURING CLASS TIME.
DETAILED OUTLINES WERE DUE ONLINE THIS MORNING AT 7AM. HONORS DESIGNATION OUTSIDE READING JOURNAL/LOGS DUE JANUARY 10. Today you will begin crafting your introduction and your first body paragraph to your issues essay. We will take a look at a Synthesis Writing "How To" in order to see an example of (get this) HOW TO "do" synthesis writing as a whole, as well as how to break down and write a specific introduction and first paragraph. DETAILED OUTLINE IS DUE ONLINE TOMORROW BY 7AM.
Learning Target: I will understand how to evaluate an introduction and thesis.
Detailed Issues Outline -Once you have the outline complete, begin to craft your thesis statement and your 2-3 TSs.
Topic: Freshman Campuses Claim-your argument: School districts in Washington should choose to utilize freshman campuses. Thesis: There are several reasons why having a freshman campus or academy is a solid choice for school districts statewide. Freshman campuses allow incoming high schoolers to focus more on academics, without the fear of bullying in hallways. Administrators and teachers also report there are far fewer discipline issues and a much higher passing rate when grade 9 students are at their own campus. Opposition’s arguments: Feelings of isolation, could hinder extra curricular activities Outlines - Organizing multiple CDs into distinct paragraphs and connected chunks that help prove the thesis.
Today you are going to quickly re-create your Family-Tree Brainstorm now that you have a better idea of what your issues essay is going to be about. You will be turning this in online.
The template can be found here: Family Tree Brainstorm. You won’t be able to fit everything on the template because it is a presentation slide. You will instead show your work on this document: Family Tree Brainstorm Layout. Your goal is to complete this in 15 minutes. None of it needs to be complete sentences. You do not need to show entire quotes. CMs should just be a few ideas. Again, you are recreating the brainstorm because you are going to submit it online. Please exchange your brainstorm with a partner. Underneath the template is a place for your partner to write their name, their written evaluation of your brainstorm, and their scale score (based on the Brainstorming Scale--click here). This should be about 15 minutes total. Once you have completed the exchange, please submit your brainstorm to Turnitin.com. Taking the insight from your partner, please continue working on your detailed outline. Please begin to fill out this Detailed Essay Outline.
It is a required component of this research project, and is worth 50 points. If you are able, please sign up to conference with me during 1st lunch today or after school today. If I have already met with you, you are good to go. Today I will begin conferencing with you on your thesis statements and topic statements. If you are not currently meeting with me, you should be working on research and planning.
Continue researching the topic that you chose yesterday for your Family Tree Brainstorm. Keep a record of what articles/websites your are reading, and begin selecting CDs that are appropriate for the different sub-topics you thought out yesterday.
As a reminder, my overall topic was Syrian Refugees. My thesis was: European countries should be required to take in Syrian refugees. My three sub topics (which will become my topic sentences) were:
Today is where you will specifically be seeking out the CDs that will support your sub-topics/solutions for your over all thesis. Just think about harvesting and keeping track of CDs. Tomorrow we will begin to work on writing a thesis, the overall guide for your essay. I am able to check email today, so if you are feeling desperate, write me! You should be working quietly. Don't forget to plug your Chromebooks back in when you are done! Learning Target: I will understand how to evaluate sources.
Task 1: Evaluating Sources
Task 2: Issues Ideas (2 on education issues, 1 on a global issue)
HOMEWORK: Pick one of the issues you researched today to focus on for your issues essay. Complete the Family Tree Brainstorm. Focus on finding 4-5 different sources, about 15 bulleted CDs. Today you will be looking at the reviews that you received yesterday. Taking that feedback into account, please begin editing and revising your critical film review. It is due tomorrow online by 11:59pm.
