You should focus today on purging your head of all of your gut-reactions to the movie. Due online at the end of the period. Or, turn in a hand-written draft.
Also, take this survey: Critical Film Review Survey Today we finished watching the 1939 film and discussed the major differences between the novel and the movie.
Be prepared tomorrow to start drafting a critical film review, Several notes:
Today we continued watching the 1939 version of Of Mice and Men. taking notes along the way. On Thursday we reviewed the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” and then rewatched a bit of the 1932 film version. Today the focus will be on comparing the text of the novel OMAM with two different film versions.
Students need to be taking notes on what they watch today. No one should be working on Chromebooks or on their phones--they should be taking notes by hand. The videos are from the very beginning of the novel (chapter 1). They should immediately take note of similarities or differences between the novel and the film(s), but may also want to note any differences between the two film versions. Some possible questions: How are the characters of Lennie and George played differently? What choices does the director make that help advance Steinbeck’s story and characterization? Be sure to look at the assignment handout I gave you on Thursday. We watched these clips from the 1992 version first (we had previously watched this entire film): Of Mice and Men (1/10) Movie CLIP - Lennie's Dead Mouse (1992) HD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCM-sEpyh1Q Of Mice and Men (2/10) Movie CLIP - The Loneliest Guys in the World (1992) HD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16bGLMEtAww We then watched the following 1939 version, The same scenes as the 1992 version occur within the first 13 minutes or so, but we continued playing the film until the end of class since students have never seen this version before. Reminder: Paragraph Portfolios are due online tomorrow, Friday, November 11, at 11:59 pm. We are moving onto our next skill, synthesis writing. Synthesis involves taking two different things and joining them together to form a new whole. In writing, this is done through the citation of multiple sources. Our next task will be for you to write a Critical Film Review. A critical film review will be, in this instance, a comparison and analysis of a text that has been adapted for the screen. We have read two stories that have been turned into films: Of Mice and Men and "The Most Dangerous Game." You will need to select one of these pieces of fiction and its corresponding film to focus on in your review. This critical review, while requiring CDs and CMs just like an essay, is a much more informal writing endeavor. Click here for the critical film review rubric. Today we re-watched a bit of the 1932 film adaptation of "The Most Dangerous Game" as a reminder of what we should be looking for/focusing on for the review. PDF - Text of "The Most Dangerous Game" Today you will be looking at the peer reviews done on your Paragraph Portfolio. You will have three in total from other students. Read all reviews and then get to work making changes/revisions according to the feedback you have received.
This will be the final work time in class for your final draft of the portfolio. Final draft is due online on Friday, November 11, by 11:59pm. |
