Today we...
Reviewed plot elements. Charted plot elements for "Two Kinds," with particular focus on the climax. Class discussion about the confusion surrounding the climax: is the climax the horrible talent show, or is the climax the argument with Ma the next day? Discussed how we will be writing a two-chunk paragraph analysis on the elements of plot in the story. Specifically, we each chose one element to focus on, and viewed it as the best/ideal example of that element. (For example, the climax in "Two Kinds" is a perfect example of what all climaxes should be, and here is why.) After choosing one element, we found four concrete details that would best represent our viewpoint. We will be working on these paragraphs over the next few days in class, focusing on structured writing as well. Homework: Vocabulary HW #2 sheet due tomorrow!

Today we... Found out that we are working towards a Paragraph Portfolio for this Short Story unit: we will be writing three different paragraphs: one on plot, one on theme, and one on characters. Explored a PowerPoint presentation about the elements of plot structure.
We had a discussion about plot structure: what have we read or seen that follows this structure? What have we read or seen that doesn't follow this structure? We quickly plotted out The Hunger Games, as this is a story that most of us are familiar with.
We began reading "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan in class. We need to finish reading this short story for homework. Links below: "Two Kinds" Part One "Two Kinds" Part Two "Two Kinds" Part Three "Two Kinds" Part Four "Two Kinds" Part Five Today we... Took our first Vocabulary quiz. If you were absent today, please come see Mrs. Hopkins to schedule a time to complete the assessment. After the quiz we immediately jumped into defining our second week of vocabulary words together as a class, and we received our vocabulary homework sheet (due Wednesday, 9/17). Aside from studying vocab and working on the HW sheet...no additional homework!
Today we... In first period, we selected our ASB room representatives. Thank you, Kyle and J.J., for stepping up to the plate! Today we focused on Reading Strategies!
We then immediately applied those reading strategies to an excerpt from John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley. The link below is the story from our textbook.
Travels With Charley Don't forget, we have our first vocabulary test tomorrow! Today we... Had an introduction to our expectations and procedures for vocabulary for the year. Fridays will be "Vocab Day": each week we will have ten new words to focus on. We will define those words together in class, and get a vocabulary homework sheet which we will be able to connect to our personal lives. Homework sheets will be due on Wednesdays, with the quiz for those words on Friday. And then the whole thing repeats. :) Here are this week's words:
Today we... Took a mini-quiz on Structured Writing components, and wrote a two-chunk paragraph on education, based off of what we have been discussing in class. This was an in-class assessment, and was due at the end of the period.
Today we... Did a super quick review of Structured Writing. Used the Mark Twain poster as an example for a TS, CD, and CM. "This poster is the most thought-provoking item in Mrs. Hopkins' classroom..." Participated in a whole class discussion about the education in Afghanistan videos, as related to our two possible prompts for our in-class write. Shared CDs (notes) with a partner to see what we may have missed. As a class, shared out our individual CDs, and charted them on the board under the two prompts: Where did they best fit? Homework: Prepare for in-class write tomorrow on one of these two prompts:
Today we... Turned in our Intro Letters in Google Drive and emailed Mrs. Hopkins that we had done so. took a quiz on Structured Writing, which was in this PowerPoint:
Then we actually went over our responses, and did a quick review of Structured Writing.
Homework for the weekend: None! Today we... saw a soothing video of waves on a tropical beach as we came in the door. First period quickly took our reading/writing survey from yesterday. We watched four videos about education for women and girls in Afghanistan, and took notes as we watched. We then drafted responses to more in-depth questions about the videos and our own relationship with education. Here is a document with web address to the videos, as well as the questions posed in class.
We took a stretch break! We filled out the triangular "Getting to Know You" Sheet. Second period even got to do the activity and learned some fun facts about their classmates!
Yay! The first day of school! Today we... Figured out our seating charts. :) Saw this website. Learned fun facts about Mrs. Hopkins (football, coffee, and eyeballs). Received our first assignment, the letter to Mrs. Hopkins, which is due in Google Drive on Friday, 9/5/14.
Took a quick reading/writing survey. First period, you didn't "get" to do this yet...but you will!
