***My apologies for not having this up sooner. Instead of publishing this yesterday, I hid it from sight. Oooops!***
Today we... Wrote. Please see below for our writing prompt. Mrs. Hopkins gave back our Night group paragraphs. These included comments and suggestions for improvement. If you would like to revise the paragraph for a better grade, please come see Mrs. Hopkins before making any changes. Mrs. Hopkins advised that we look over the suggestions/comments on the group paragraph and see if anything applies to our current writing on rhetorical analysis. The remainder of the period was work time on the capital punishment analysis.

Wrote. Please see below for prompt. Turned in Week #5 and Week #6 of our daily writing, On the bottom of the paper with our explanation of what advice we gave and received yesterday during WWS, we each ranked ourselves according to our 4-point proficiency scale on rhetorical analysis. We then turned in this paper. Today we...
Wrote. Please see below for our prompt. Participated in Writer's Workshop. We paid special attention to whether or not definitions of the rhetorical devices being analyzed were present. Definitions can either appear in the introduction, or at the beginning of each body paragraph. HOMEWORK: Tomorrow you will turn in an analysis of what advice you gave and what advice you received. Today we... Wrote. Please see below for our writing prompt. (In second period, we had a good number of students gone for the Running Start informational meeting. Remember, you are still responsible for your daily writes!) In preparation of reading our final article, "The Revolutionary", which is about Dick Fosbury and how he changed the sport of high jump, we watched the following two videos: What's the Best High Jump Technique? Dick Fosbury - Gold Medal Moments We then read the article, annotating for examples of rhetorical devices. Mrs. Hopkins' challenge is to look for devices that we didn't learn about last year or in middle school. Taking note of "imagery" and "voice" are great--when you are in the 8th grade. As sophomores, you need to be expanding your exposure to rhetoric, and looking for writing techniques that are unusual but effective. Work off of the yellow sheet that lists possible rhetorical devices--and look in "The Revolutionary" for some you haven't noticed before. Don't forget: you need one copy of your death penalty rhetorical analysis tomorrow for Writer's Workshop.

Wrote. Please see below for our writing prompt. Mrs. Hopkins came around and checked off our capital punishment rhetorical analysis chart from yesterday. Using the compare/contrast chart, we began crafting a formal essay (using Chromebooks). Basically, we did all the hard work yesterday of compiling evidence, explaining how these are examples of rhetoric, and which essay/article shows superior usage. Today is merely a matter of writing topic and concluding sentences, as well as focusing on proper lead-in and embedding of quotes. Who knew you could write an essay in just one day? You should have three body paragraphs (one for each device), with two chunks each. One hard copy of your rhetorical analysis will be due on Thursday for Writer's Workshop. Today we... Wrote. Please see below for our writing prompt. Did a rhetorical analysis on our two capital punishment essays, "The Penalty of Death" and "The Unquiet Death of Robert Harris." Articles and instructions below.

Wrote. Please see below for our prompt. Due to technology issues...we were unable to watch the videos Mrs. Hopkins had planned, which is the set-up and background information for our final article. So, we had a relaxing morning together. No homework for this weekend. Mrs. Hopkins is absent today. See the writing prompt below. Please write for ten minutes on a separate sheet of paper. After your daily write is over, please turn in your SOAPSTone for "The Unquiet Death of Robert Harris." Today you will read "Shunned" by Meredith Hall. It is the next article in our reading packet, after "The Unquiet Death of Robert Harris." (There is a PDF version below.) Please annotate the text as you read, looking for examples of rhetorical devices. You will also need to be answering questions about the article (document below). These questions must be submitted to Turnitin.com before class tomorrow. You may not work in pairs or groups. Your work must be your own.
Today we... Wrote. Please see below for our prompt. Read "The Penalty of Death" (please see below) and discussed as a class. HOMEWORK: Please complete SOAPSTone for this article and be prepared to turn it in tomorrow.
