Today we... Begin a new unit on rhetorical analysis using the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel. Please make sure you have picked up a copy of the book from the sub--you are expected to start reading right away! This unit will introduce elements of non-fiction technique with an eye towards students learning how to conduct beginning-level rhetorical analysis. Remember that rhetoric is the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing (we had an intro to rhetorical appeals in our unit on Antigone). Some of the strategies we will be addressing in this unit are:
HOMEWORK (or if you get done early): Begin reading Night. Please come to class tomorrow having read the first chapter (pages 1-20).
Below please find the assignment for the All Quiet on the Western Front essay. Today you should look this over and get to work on planning/organizing/brainstorming. Depending on our schedule, there may not be much/any in-class writing time. However, you have done a lot of writing already: you can use any of the chunks you wrote while reading the novel in your essay, as long as they are modified to be clear and coherent.
There are also several documents here that are organizers for you to work with, the first being a 2-chunk shaper. There is also an organizer for intros as well as conclusions. Click here for the essay assignment. It will be due at the end of next week/beginning of finals week. It would be a good idea to get to work on this today and over the weekend. Click here for the introduction organizer. Click here for the 2-chunk shaper. Click here for the conclusion organizer. Click here for a transitional phrases list. NOTE: We will begin (and finish) reading the non-fiction novel Night next week. Today we...
Finished the poetry analysis we started yesterday and submitted everything to Turnitin.com. Today Mrs. Hopkins was absent because she was getting her ankle checked out. The verdict is in: it's broken!
Here is what the sub plans said: In a document they will save in their LA10 folder in their Google Drive, students must do the following:
Today we...
Discussed All Quiet on the Western Front and the ending of the novel. We focused in particular on the final paragraph and (spoiler alert!) Paul's death. We also discussed "shell shock" (what we more or less now understand to be PTSD), and the lasting trauma of war. Briefly touched on what we will be doing this week: reading WWI War Poetry, and preparing to write a synthesis essay on common themes found in the novel and poems. Finally, we ended class with a quick-write on our seven symbols (on paper, turned in at the end of class). For each symbol, we had to do the following: Write three sentences about what the symbol means or represents (commentary), and one sentence with why/how do you know/evidence/proof (CD). |
