Today you checked out a copy of All Quiet on the Western Front. We will begin this unit next week.
No more time in-class to work on the Paragraph Portfolio. It is due tomorrow, Friday, September 30th, at 11:59pm to Turnitin.com. Today, please begin a One-Pager, either on "The Lottery" or "The Pedestrian." There will be work time tomorrow. Today you had work time on your Paragraph Portfolio. It is due on Friday at 11:59pm on Turnitin.com.
Today we looked at some student samples of the paragraphs you've been writing.
The samples were evaluated using our theme rubric/scale, and our paragraph rubric/scale. You received (pink) hard copies of these in class today. You also received your prompt page for the Paragraph Portfolio, which is due at 11:59pm on Friday. Today we read "The Pedestrian."
Then, you needed to choose either "The Pedestrian" or "The Lottery," and write a two-chunk paragraph examining a theme of the story. Don't forget, your theme statement must include a thematic topic + the author's message/opinion. Due at the end of class on Turnitin.com Today we had a mock lottery and public stoning, in an effort to crown an "Old Man Warner" in each class.
Today we compiled two lists on the board from yesterday: Observations and Questions/Concerns relate to "The Lottery."
Then we had a class discussion. Today was the Welcome Back assembly and handbook meetings, so our classes were shorter.
Today you read “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, along with a super creepy audio version that included tuba and organ music. Before Mrs. Hopkins allowed you to discuss the story, you needed to write down:
While you were finishing up your observations/questions, you watched a short, ten-minute film adaptation of the story. You know it’s creepy because it’s in black and white. We will discuss the story tomorrow. For today, in class:
Remember, this is an assessment, and should be treated as such. That means it needs to be quiet. You should be using the entire class period to write (draft), revise, and perfect your paragraph. Today we rearranged the room and you chose a new seating chart.
You turned in your One-Pager. Then you took a 2017 yearbook survey. You will get credit for filling this out, so answer thoroughly and include your name! |
